This native palm can be easily confused with another palm, L. spinosa which has been used widely as an ornamental palm throughout the island. L. spinosa, as its name implies, has prominent spines or thorns along its leaf stalk. L. ferruginea do have some thorns as well but they are much shorter and hence, not obvious.
